Game context

The Pittsburgh Pirates (65-70) visit the St. Louis Cardinals (67-68) at Busch Stadium to open a three-game NL Central series, with both clubs mired in the middle of the division standings behind Milwaukee and Chicago. Pittsburgh sends right-hander Jared Jones (2-5, 4.76 ERA) to the mound against left-hander Quinn Mathews (0-2, 6.43 ERA in limited action), while significant injuries on both sides—including Pirates absences of Mitch Keller, Ryan O'Hearn, Endy Rodriguez, and Konnor Griffin, plus Cardinals losses of Masyn Winn, Andre Pallante, and day-to-day third baseman Blaze Jordan—shape depleted lineups and bullpen usage. Recent form shows the Cardinals on a skid despite home-field edge, contrasted with Pittsburgh's road resilience amid a nine-game trip.
