Daniel Merida Aguilar, the rapidly ascending 21-year-old Spaniard ranked around No. 39, enters the US Open first-round matchup against veteran Marton Fucsovics (No. 121-122) with strong recent hard-court momentum after deep runs in Montreal and Cincinnati. Merida has climbed hundreds of ranking spots in two years and holds an 18-9 record for 2026, contrasting sharply with the 34-year-old Hungarian’s 9-16 season mark and recent three-match losing streak. Their lone prior meeting came on clay in 2022 (Fucsovics win), but the outdoor hard courts and Merida’s current form and serve effectiveness shift the dynamic. Trader consensus reflects this gap, pricing Merida as a heavy favorite while noting Fucsovics’ experience in 13 prior US Opens as a potential variable in a best-of-five set.
