Maria Timofeeva26⁵Game context
Elise Mertens enters this US Open second-round matchup as the clear favorite, ranked around No. 20-23 with a deeper Grand Slam resume and a 1-0 head-to-head edge after defeating Maria Timofeeva in three sets at Wimbledon 2026. The 30-year-old Belgian arrives with strong recent hard-court form, including a runner-up finish at the Monterrey WTA event and a straight-sets first-round win over Kaitlin Quevedo, though she has not advanced past the quarterfinals in New York since 2020. Timofeeva, the 22-year-old Uzbek ranked No. 86, secured her US Open main-draw debut victory over Tamara Zidansek and posted solid hard-court results in Monterrey qualifying and the main draw, but faces a significant step up in opponent quality on outdoor hard courts. Both players are right-handed with no reported injuries affecting availability.
