Game context

The Pittsburgh Pirates enter the series finale at Petco Park with a 2-0 lead after a 12-inning win and a 1-0 shutout, buoyed by a resurgent bullpen featuring recent additions Kirby Yates and Camilo Doval that has limited San Diego to just two runs across the first two games. The Padres (71-62) remain in the NL wild-card hunt as the second-place NL West club, while the Pirates (65-69) sit fourth in the NL Central and trail the final playoff spot by several games. Right-handers Bubba Chandler (6-8, 4.38 ERA) and Randy Vasquez (9-6, 4.19 ERA) take the mound in a closely matched starter duel, with multiple injuries on both rosters—including key absences for San Diego’s rotation depth—shaping lineup decisions. Fernando Tatis Jr. continues to anchor the Padres offense, but Pittsburgh’s road form and momentum create a competitive dynamic reflected in the market’s modest home favorite pricing.
