Game context

The Royals enter the August 29 matchup at Progressive Field riding an 11-1 surge, capped by Michael Wacha’s eight-inning shutout the prior night that snapped Cleveland’s seven-game win streak. Kansas City’s 61-75 record still places them last in the AL Central, but their recent form, including quality starts and improved run prevention, has narrowed the gap in implied probabilities despite a 24-45 road mark. The Guardians (68-67) remain in the wild-card mix, two and a half games behind the division leader, yet face continued questions around their offense against left-handers and a depleted bullpen. Multiple injuries on both sides—most notably Royals infielders and Guardians relievers—further compress lineup depth and alter bullpen usage patterns for the series finale.
