National Bank Open, Qualification: Katie Volynets vs Sloane Stephens

Game context
Katie Volynets holds a substantial edge in current form and ranking (WTA 93) heading into this National Bank Open qualifying match against Sloane Stephens (WTA 307) on Toronto hard courts. Volynets enters with a strong 30-19 record in 2026, including recent wins over higher-ranked opponents and a quarterfinal run in Memphis on similar surfaces. Stephens, a 2017 US Open champion, brings extensive experience and tactical variety but has operated well below her peak ranking amid inconsistent results. The matchup pits Volynets' aggressive baseline game and momentum against Stephens' veteran resilience in a high-stakes qualifier where the winner advances to the main draw of the WTA 1000 event. Surface conditions and recent scheduling favor the younger American's aggressive style.
