Monterrey Open: Nikola Bartunkova vs Elise Mertens

Game context
Elise Mertens, the second seed and WTA No. 24, faces rising 20-year-old Nikola Bartunkova, ranked No. 38, in the Monterrey Open semifinals on hard courts. Mertens reached her first individual semifinal of the season with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 quarterfinal win over Yuliia Starodubtseva, showcasing strong serving and minimal pressure on return. Bartunkova advanced after a grueling three-set victory over compatriot Darja Vidmanova, saving multiple break points in a match that extended her run of competitive hard-court results. The pair split their prior encounters, with Mertens prevailing on hard courts at the Australian Open; her greater experience and ranking edge position her as the consensus favorite heading into the matchup ahead of the US Open.
