US Open WTA: Thea Frodin vs Elena Rybakina

Game context
Elena Rybakina enters her US Open first-round matchup against American qualifier Thea Frodin as the clear favorite, holding the No. 2 ranking and a 42-13 record in 2026 highlighted by the Australian Open title. The 27-year-old has not practiced since retiring with a leg injury during the Cincinnati quarterfinals against Iga Swiatek, though recent updates indicate steady recovery and cautious optimism about readiness for hard-court play at Flushing Meadows. Frodin, a 17-year-old ranked near No. 580 with primarily junior and ITF experience, faces a significant step up in class against a two-time major champion with elite serving and baseline power. Rybakina’s fitness timeline and any lingering effects from the recent withdrawal from mixed doubles remain the primary variables heading into the contest.
