Shapovalov holds a narrow edge in this US Open second-round matchup on hard courts, reflecting trader consensus around a 55-60% implied probability driven by his 1-0 head-to-head record, Grand Slam experience including a prior US Open quarterfinal run, and stronger hard-court baseline results. The 27-year-old Canadian arrives after a straight-sets first-round win over Kecmanovic and a productive hard-court swing that included a Los Cabos final despite earlier injury setbacks. Van Assche, ranked No. 40 at age 22, brings momentum from his maiden ATP title at Estoril and a first-round upset of No. 29 seed Norrie, but faces a left-handed power game in Shapovalov that has historically disrupted his rhythm in longer exchanges. The closely ranked contest on a fast surface favors the veteran’s serve and return depth while leaving room for the Frenchman’s recent form to test the outcome.
