Juncheng Shang enters this US Open first-round matchup as the consensus favorite over Marco Trungelliti, reflecting traders' view of the 21-year-old left-hander's higher upside despite a 5-7 hard-court record in 2026. Shang, ranked around 228 with a career-high of 47, brings greater athleticism and recent main-draw experience against top players, while the 36-year-old Trungelliti sits at No. 83 with a stronger 27-23 seasonal mark that includes solid challenger results and a Cincinnati second-round appearance. The hard-court surface at Flushing Meadows plays to Shang's aggressive baseline game, and the absence of prior head-to-head history leaves room for the younger player to dictate rallies. Late-summer scheduling and potential fatigue for the veteran further tilt implied probabilities toward Shang in this opener.
