US Open ATP: Gael Monfils vs Learner Tien

Game context
Learner Tien enters the US Open second-round matchup as the clear favorite against retiring 40-year-old Gael Monfils, reflecting the 20-year-old American’s higher ranking near No. 15, stronger 2026 hard-court results, and 1-0 head-to-head edge from a straight-sets win in Montreal last month. Monfils, ranked around No. 311, celebrated his birthday with a four-set comeback victory over Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in round one but has shown inconsistent form and physical limitations this season. Tien followed his own straight-sets win over Nuno Borges with consistent recent Masters-level performances on the surface. The hard-court evening session at Flushing Meadows highlights the matchup between Monfils’ veteran experience and flair against Tien’s superior current athleticism and ranking, with traders pricing in the substantial gap in recent results and conditioning.
