Daniil Medvedev36Game context
Daniil Medvedev enters this National Bank Open second-round matchup as a heavy favorite against Botic van de Zandschulp on Montreal hard courts, backed by a 4-0 head-to-head record and superior ranking. The Russian has compiled a strong 2026 campaign with two titles and a 30-12 record, showing improved consistency under new coaching despite earlier-season frustrations. Van de Zandschulp, ranked outside the top 60, has produced limited results on the surface this year and has yet to take a set from Medvedev in prior encounters. Key factors include Medvedev’s elite return game and baseline depth against the Dutch player’s counterpunching style, along with both competitors’ recent hard-court form entering the North American swing. No major injury concerns have surfaced ahead of the contest.
