National Bank Open: Learner Tien vs Gael Monfils

Game context
Learner Tien enters this National Bank Open second-round matchup on Montreal hard courts as the clear favorite against 39-year-old Gaël Monfils, reflecting the 20-year-old American’s rapid ascent into the ATP top 20 and Monfils’ sharply diminished ranking near 340. Tien reached the Australian Open quarterfinals and Madrid quarterfinals in 2026 while securing a title and posting a strong win-loss record, though he arrives after consecutive losses. Monfils, competing in what appears to be a farewell season, holds a 3-7 record this year amid ongoing injury limitations and has struggled for consistency on the main tour. The pair has never met, and the fast hard-court surface plus Monfils’ age and recent form create significant barriers for an upset, even with the veteran’s experience and athletic history at the event.
