US Open ATP: Matteo Arnaldi vs James Duckworth

Matteo Arnaldi enters the US Open first-round matchup as the higher-ranked player at No. 36 and No. 30 seed, holding a recent ranking surge after a French Open semifinal run earlier in 2026. His hard-court form has been inconsistent, with just 2-6 or 3-7 records in 2026 ATP main-draw matches and a second-round exit in Cincinnati. James Duckworth, ranked No. 71, arrives with stronger recent hard-court volume and a solid run to the Winston-Salem semifinals, yet his right-leg injury retirement there on August 28 raises recovery questions with minimal turnaround before this hard-court encounter. The pair has no prior head-to-head history, leaving Arnaldi’s seeding and overall standing as the primary drivers of current market positioning.
