Game context

Tomas Machac enters as the clear favorite in this Winston-Salem Open second-round matchup on hard courts, backed by his No. 58 ranking, stronger career record, and multiple titles compared with Mees Rottgering’s No. 389 standing and limited ATP experience. Machac returns from an extended injury layoff after a straight-sets loss in Cincinnati, raising questions about his current fitness and rust. Rottgering, a 19-year-old qualifier, has generated momentum with straight-set qualifying wins and his first ATP main-draw victory over Jan Choinski in three sets, marking his initial top-level success. The pair has no prior head-to-head record. Market pricing reflects the substantial gap in established level while acknowledging the underdog’s recent form on the surface.
