National Bank Open: Joao Fonseca vs Ben Shelton

Game context
Ben Shelton, the defending champion and world No. 10, faces rising Brazilian Joao Fonseca in the National Bank Open fourth round on hard courts in Montreal. Shelton enters with strong recent form, multiple 2026 titles, and a 1-0 head-to-head edge after a three-set win over Fonseca in the Munich quarterfinals earlier this year. Fonseca, ranked No. 27 with a career-high of No. 24, arrives on a confident run after straight-set victories over Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud, showcasing improved consistency and power at age 19. Both players have advanced through their opening matches, but Shelton's experience in high-stakes Masters events and serve-heavy style could prove decisive on this surface, while Fonseca's momentum and aggressive baseline game create realistic upset potential in what shapes up as a clash of young talents.
