Game context

Both teams enter the three-game series at Wrigley Field with nearly identical records near .500, the Blue Jays sitting 10 games back in the AL East and the Cubs eight games out in the NL Central. Chicago holds home-field advantage and benefits from strong recent individual performances, including Pete Crow-Armstrong’s cycle. Pitching depth will be tested, as the Cubs placed closer Daniel Palencia on the injured list with elbow inflammation and have multiple starters sidelined, while Toronto deals with Max Scherzer’s back spasms and ongoing absences for Daulton Varsho and Addison Barger. Probable starters such as Kevin Gausman and Ben Brown set the early tone, with bullpen reliability and offensive consistency at altitude and in variable June weather likely to influence outcomes across the series.
