Cincinnati Open: Lorenzo Sonego vs Frances Tiafoe

Game context
Tiafoe enters the Cincinnati Open second-round matchup with Lorenzo Sonego shortly after hand surgery roughly eight days prior, raising questions about serve and return effectiveness on outdoor hard courts despite his recent Halle title and strong 31-14 record in 2026. Sonego, ranked outside the top 80, holds a 3-1 head-to-head edge, including a straight-sets win in their last meeting, and brings solid recent form plus experience navigating Masters 1000 draws as a lower seed. Tiafoe’s higher ranking and aggressive baseline game give him the implied edge in trader pricing, but the short recovery window and potential lingering effects from surgery create realistic upset potential for the Italian, who has shown resilience in similar hard-court encounters. The match serves as an early test of Tiafoe’s fitness ahead of the US Open swing.
