Game context
The Chicago Cubs hold a clearer edge in the NL Central standings and wild card race, sitting roughly six games ahead of the Cardinals with stronger recent momentum after snapping prolonged losing streaks and securing series wins at Wrigley Field. Both clubs remain in playoff contention but have dealt with pitching inconsistencies, as the Cubs navigate multiple arms on the injured list including elbow concerns while the Cardinals have missed key contributors like Lars Nootbaar. Head-to-head results have been mixed, featuring lopsided outings alongside tighter contests, with home/away splits and bullpen reliability likely shaping outcomes in their upcoming NL Central matchup.
