Roberto Carballes Baena holds a clear edge in the Bonn Challenger first-round matchup on outdoor clay, where his extensive experience on the surface and higher ranking around No. 163–177 position him as the stronger favorite against Max Houkes. The Spanish lefty has competed regularly at ATP level, though recent results include a loss to Marc-Andrea Huesler in Zug and an early exit from Wimbledon qualifying. Houkes, ranked No. 241 with a career high of 231 reached in June, enters on the back of ITF M25 wins in Metzingen and prior Challenger success in Kigali but lacks comparable clay-court pedigree or ATP main-draw depth. With no prior head-to-head meetings, the contest hinges on Carballes Baena’s consistency and tactical familiarity with slow European red clay versus Houkes’s recent momentum at lower tiers.
